Tree to Bottle: Vermont’s Maple Weekend

With an early spring and warm weather hitting the Upper Valley for the last two weeks, the annual “gold rush” of flowing sap and rising steam from the evaporator’s boil is close at hand.

The Maple Sugar Open House is coordinated by more than 90 Vermont maple sugar producers who open their doors and invite the public to experience the wonder of our favorite sweet treat. Set for Saturday, March 23rd and Sunday, March 24th, get out and enjoy pancake breakfasts, sugar-on-snow, sugarhouse tours, and maple product samples. A complete list of participating sugar makers throughout Vermont can be found here.

One of our favorite local stops on the tour is Sugarbush Farm, located at the top of Sugarbush Farm Road in Pomfret. The farm is just over the town line from both Woodstock and nearby Quechee, Vermont. A scenic drive past some of the Woodstock area’s finest country estates on River Road and High Pastures Road takes you to the 500-acre hill farm.

Here, four generations of the Luce Family continue the tradition of producing some of the best pure Vermont maple syrup in the area. (They are also famous for their excellent waxed cheeses made right on the farm.) You’ll find free cheese and maple syrup samples in the farm store, and you can watch a video on the syrup-making process. And take a walk in the sugarbush to see how Jeff and Ralph tap the Farm’s trees.  Free admission year-round, daily from 9 am-5 pm.
