With a population of just under 3,000 spread out over no fewer than seven smaller hamlets and villages within the larger town, Thetford, Vermont includes East Thetford, North Thetford, Thetford Hill, Thetford Center, Rice’s Mills, Union Village, and Post Mills. A small private airport, a center of both glider and balloon activity, can be found near the Vermontasaurus on Hangar Bay Lane in Post Mills. The Post Mills Soaring Club was founded in 1987 with the goal of bringing affordable soaring to the Upper Connecticut River Valley. In the spring, Post Mills Airport hosts their experimental balloon and airship meet.

Thetford is home to Thetford Academy, Vermont's oldest secondary school and has a long historical connection to summer camps and scouting. The Girl Scouts of the Green and White Mountains, Camp Farnsworth, Camp Lochearn and others all call the shore of Lake Fairlee in Post Mills their home.
