A Gourmet Market and Butcher in South Royalton, Vermont

Roma’s Butchery opened in March 2021 in the former Fox & Harrow restaurant along Route 14 just outside South Royalton. Following a recent visit we had to add it to our “must visit” Upper Valley list. A prominent local landmark, the Fox Stand ca. 1814, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a particularly fine example of a federal period tavern and served travelers on the Royalton Turnpike. Adaptively reused over the years, it has a new and delicious steward in Roma’s Butchery, an enterprise that also happens to be run entirely by a team of confident women.

A whole animal custom butchery and retail shop, the selection of custom cuts of local, organic and pasture raised meats is impressive and vast. Roma and her team break down the whole and half carcasses into fresh cuts ready for home cooking and grilling. In addition to beautiful cuts of pork, lamb, beef, and chicken, Roma’s specializes in unique house-made fresh and smoked sausages, including kielbasa, chorizo, linguica and a custom-blend hot dog made with beef and pork in a lamb casing. House-cured bacon comes in several styles along with a variety of meats smoked over hickory and apple wood chips.

A wide variety of spices, rubs, sauces, and staples that compliment meat cookery are also on offer in addition to a daily rotation of baked goods from a variety of local bakers including breads and croissants from Wild Fern Bakery, pretzels from Whispering Moon, and some the finest frosted circular pastries available from the Local Donut.

Recently Roma’s has gone next level with on-site BBQ and lunch served on Friday, Saturday and Sunday all summer long from 11:00-4:00. The menu expands at 4:00pm with an evening tapas-inspired take on barbecue and some fancy smothered French fries that you will not believe.
